A new corrugator backed by independent box-makers is set to open this summer at the former Mondi facility in Scunthorpe, according to local media reports
The £10m project will create up to 100 jobs at the former Mondi Hypac factory in Scunthorpe, according to the Scunthorpe Telegraph.
It is being led by the US-based Corrugated Synergies International, which describes itself on its website as “the innovator and leader in developing sheet feeders for the independent box plant community”.
The website states that the company runs 15 corrugators around the world under a model which allows independent sheet plants “synergize and take control of their destiny by integrating raw material supply”.
It also reveals that the Scunthorpe project is known at this stage as CorrBoard UK.
Plans for CSI to enter the UK market were first mooted in the autumn of 2012, but further details have not emerged until now.
A number of independent box-makers in the UK corrugated market are supporting the project, although none has been named publicly so far.
In the Scunthorpe Telegraph article, CSI chief operating office Victor Pinto said: “What we do is bring together partners which are also customers in building corrugated sheet-feeding facilities.
“We install a corrugators and manufacture sheets that become boxes for packaging. We have partnered with several UK-based box makers.”
The company is reportedly investing more than £10m in the facility on top of the purchase of the building in Scunthorpe, which had an asking price of some £4.5m.
Mondi Hypac ended production at the site in May 2009, with the loss of around 160 jobs.
Local council representatives welcomed the news of the facility re-opening in its new guise.
North Lincolnshire Council leader Liz Redfern said: “This is fantastic news for North Lincolnshire and 100 new jobs is a real boost to employment prospects for many residents.
“We have worked really closely with CSI to ensure that they locate in North Lincolnshire and we will continue to work with them as they start to recruit.
“The economy is really starting to pick up locally and this is just the start of a number of very positive announcements.”
The project is the latest in a number of major packaging investments in Scunthorpe in recent years.
