Shoppers call for manufacturers to produce eco-friendly packaging
US shoppers have called on manufacturers to produce more ‘environmentally friendly’ packaging, according to new research.
Research released by American consumer and retail analysts Perception Research Services shows that while only 28% of consumers said they would choose environmentally friendly packaging, 48% think manufacturers should produce more environmentally friendly packaging.
The research also shows that in 2010 fewer consumers thought that they should be responsible for recycling packaging than in 2009 – 38% in 2010 as opposed to 42% in 2009.
The survey also found that 36% of consumers expected environmentally friendly packaging to cost more in 2010 compared to 15% in 2009; the percentage of those willing to pay for eco-packaging also declined from 57% in 2008 to 51% in 2010.
‘It’s not my problem’
PRS senior vice president Jonathan Asher said: “It’s becoming clear that while consumers may voice concern for the environment, most appear unwilling – at the moment – to make any major sacrifices to make a difference.
“They would rather rely on manufacturers to provide products and packaging that they can feel good about, without changing their behaviour, giving up performance, or paying more.
“Manufacturers have had the impression that they needed to be in synch with consumers’ environmental concerns and fit with the emerging lifestyle of ‘going green’.
“Our findings suggest that rather than follow consumers’ lead, manufacturers must be at the forefront, making it easier for shoppers to buy the products they prefer while also feeling good about the environmental impact, and making as little sacrifice as possible. It’s a tall order, but if delivered, will be highly rewarded.”
