Coke eco chief calls for "whiter than white" approach to plastics recycling
Coca-Cola's European head of packaging sustainability has called on the drinks market to make its packaging 100% recyclable.
Speaking yesterday on the drinks giant's experience of using recycled PET at Pira's packaging summit, Cees van Dongen said that drinks makers needed to be "whiter than white" in their commitment to recycling PET bottles.
"We have an opportunity as brand owners to make sure that the bottles we put to market are absolutely 100% recyclable.
"There is theoretical recyclability but I'm talking about being recyclable given the infrastructure out there. They have to be recyclable - full stop."
Van Dongen also said that standard specifications for food-grade rPET needed to be put in place across Europe to guarantee quality recyclate internationally.
This would, Van Dongen said, avoid current inconsistencies across the fragmented European industry for food-grade PET recycling.
Elsewhere, he argued that major PET bottle users should be given priority in buying recycled material from waste management companies.
"There should be a right of first refusal - or right of first order - for those that have brought the bottles to the market in the first place. It's effectively the opportunity to buy back your own bottles."
