PET bottles to feature in BBC food programme
PET is set to play a major role in a TV programme tonight on the explosion of the bottled water market.
The BBC’s The Foods That Make Billions: Liquid Gold is due to focus on the growth of bottled water and will examine the role that PET bottles have played in the m multi-billion pound industry.
Pre-show reports from the BBC suggest that the introduction of PET bottles in the 1990s will be shown as a key factor in the market’s growth.
“The bottled water industry before PET on the list of all beverage categories was number seven. With the advent of PET, water jumped to the number two spot, behind carbonated soft drinks,” Michael Bellas, chairman of the Beverage Marketing Society, will tell the programme.
Charles Fishman, author of a book called The Big Thirst, tells the BBC: “Bottled water is one of those products that on many occasions when people buy it, what they’re buying isn’t the water so much as the bottle. That is the packaging and the convenience at that moment.”
