The London Assembly has called on the organisers of the London 2012 Olympic Games to set out plans for recycling facilities in a new report on the Games’ sustainability.
The ‘Going for Green’ report praises the work already done to recycle waste and avoid rubbish to landfill but finds there is still more to do.
Darren Johnson, the assembly member who chairs the environment committee, said: “There has been some excellent work [on sustainability], but we don’t want to see standards compromised in the run up to the Games.”
“We need clear targets for re-using temporary materials, more details on how organisers will promote sustainable travel and plans for recycling facilities on site and around London,” said Johnson.
The report recommends that plans for recycling facilities should be set out by next June.
Merchandising in a key element of the Games and the report highlighted the carbon impact of each product, depending on the number produced and the weight and material of the items and packaging.
“Also important for assessing the carbon impact is whether the item and packaging is recycled or re-used, or whether it is thrown away after use,” the report said.
“LOCOG’s sustainability team is working closely with the procurement team to promote the use of recycled and recyclable materials in merchandise and packaging, and to ensure that items have recycling labels.”
