Empac measures environmental impact of metal packaging
European Metal Packaging (Empac) has launched a scorecard to calculate the environmental impact of its members' products.
Empac's scorecard is designed to estimate carbon dioxide levels for metal packaging according to criteria such as recycling rates, weight and transport distances.
Environment consultancy the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research developed the data collection and software for Empac.
Firms in the sector will be able to use the scorecard to provide data on the lifecycle of the metal can from the mining of raw materials through to delivery to the customer.
Empac chief executive Gordon Shade said: "The scorecard is part of our commitment to address regulators requirements by providing fact-based and unambiguous information on our industry."
The scorecard will be updated a regular intervals to provide an accurate picture of the carbon footprint of metal packaging.
Empac members include Crown, Impress and Huber Packaging Group as well as the UK's Metal Packaging Manufacturers Association (MPMA).
