The Secretary of State for Business and Energy has said he is “proud” to have facilities such as Saica’s new £300m paper mill in the UK as he inaugurated the plant yesterday
Speaking at the official opening event for the mill in Partington, near Manchester, Michael Fallon (pictured left) expressed support for the packaging sector and Saica’s huge investment in the UK in recent years.
Speaking during a tour of the plant, which uses 100% recycled paper to produce corrugated case material, Fallon told Packaging News: “It’s increasingly a green industry and that is essentially about recycling. The industry is greening and Saica is a leader in that way.”
He added that he was both “supportive and proud” of the industry and of the investment that Saica has made in its UK business, which has totalled close to £500m across its corrugated packaging business since the Spanish business moved into the UK in 2006.
The inauguration this week comes more than a year after Saica kicked off production at the PM11 mill, which is capable of producing up to 450,000 tonnes of paper a year and is, according to the company, Europe’s most advanced recycled paper mill. It has also created 94 direct jobs for the local economy.
In his speech to open the mill, Fallon said: “This cutting edge facility shows how state of the art technology and innovation can help drive growth. It’s a real boost for the economy and will create new jobs for Partington and the local area.”
Fallon was the guest of honour at an event which was also attended by dignitaries including the British Ambassador to Spain, Giles Paxman, and Patricia Young, the Mayor of Trafford, the borough in which the mill is located.
When construction began in 2010, the Partington mill was the fourth-biggest foreign investment in the UK that year.
Speaking at the opening, Saica president Ramón Alejandro said he was “thrilled” that the facility was now running at full capacity.
“This is a significant investment for Saica and demonstrates our commitment to both our UK customers and boosting the wider economy.”
