A new ethylene-absorbing patch has launched that could extend the shelf life of packaged fruit and vegetables and help push producers into markets further afield, its maker believes
Plastics packaging group Sirane has launched the patch, which traps ethylene produced within the pack to slow down the food-degradation process.
Managing director Simon Balderson said: “Many fruit and vegetables naturally produce ethylene and if it remains in the packaging, it will speed up the ageing process.
“Our Dri-Fresh Fresh-Hold EA labels are a simple, effective and cost-effective solution to the problems caused by ethylene within fresh produce packaging.”
He told PN: “We were approached by a big retailer who said 8% of its vacuum packed meat was being rejected because of bad confinement odours; can we solve the problem?
“The market is potentially absolutely huge. The product is available in several formats including reel for easy application by hand or applicator. It can be a sticky label or non-sticky insert.”
The odour-absorbing patch can be integrated with any type of packaging, be it pads, bags, films or cartons and trays and can be customised to meet specific requirements, he said.
Produce that gives off a lot of ethylene includes apricots, avocados, bananas, melons, kiwi fruits, mangoes, nectarines, papaya, peaches, pears, plums and tomatoes.
“A lot of the fresh produce where ethylene is a problem is also the produce that is shipped the furthest, in some cases covering vast distances before it is finally sold.”
