London Marathon 2011: Packaging runners do us proud
Thousands of athletes pounded the streets of London to raise money for hundreds of charities on 17 April.
A number of people in the packaging industry also conquered the 26 mile London Marathon course on 17 April to support good causes across the country.
It is estimated that some 36,500 participants managed to cross the finish line to earn their medals and earn money for charity.
Edale’s managing director James Boughton was part of the amazing bunch of runners that crossed the finishing line.
He completed it in 4 hrs 4min and ran for the deafblind charity Sense. To date, he has raised more than £1,000.
Another packaging runner showing great determination on 17 April was API Laminates material champion Chris Clark. He completed the marathon in 4hrs 25 min 57 sec.
Clark has raised £2,145.20, so far, for Christies – one of Europe’s specialist cancer centres based in Manchester. He told Packaging News that the marathon was “long hard road training but enjoyable nonetheless”.
He added: “I felt OK up about 16 miles and then started to get tired. My wife and children were at mile 20 which really helped as I decided to give everything I had up to that point and then take a break.
“I stayed and chatted with them for around 5 minutes, had a few photos etc and then carried on. I cramped up from mile 22 but managed to get to the end limping along with everyone else!”
Another packaging runner that put his best foot forward was Novelis Packaging operations manager Steve Hedar.
He ran the marathon in 4hrs 57min and raised 32,000 for charity Children with Leukaemia.
Looking back on the event, Hedar said: “I was shattered and emotionally drained. I enjoyed the first 10 miles until the going got tough. This was the first time I had run the London Marathon.
“Meeting Paula Radcliffe, meeting new people and talking to new people along the way were the highlights for me.
“The training literally takes over your life. I went for a four mile run on Boxing Day. I will not rush to do the Marathon again!”
