WHO says BPA bans are ‘premature’
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has said moves to ban Bisphenol-A are “premature” as current evidence is insufficient to support such measures.
A WHO/United Nations Food and Agriculture meeting in Ottawa, Canada last week confirmed that food was the main source of human exposure to Bisphenol-A (BPA) as the chemical migrates from food packaging.
But, based on food consumption surveys, the panel of experts concluded that the amount of BPA circulating in the human body was “very low and rapidly eliminated through urine”.
The WHO said that it was “difficult to interpret the relevance” of studies that showed adverse health outcomes from exposure to low levels of BPA in the light of current knowledge.
It said that while more work was currently going on “initiation of public health measures would be premature”.
“Several important studies are already in progress that will help clarify the extent of human health impact of this chemical,” said WHO toxicologist Angelika Tritscher.
