Warhol Coca-Cola bottle sells for $35m
An Andy Warhol painting of a Coca-Cola bottle has sold for $35.36m (£22m) at a Sotherby’s auction in New York.
Warhol painted the Coca-Cola (4) (Large Coca-Cola) as part of a series between 1961 and 1962 and it was bought by the seller, Elizabeth Rea, in 1983 for $143,000.
Tuesday’s sale at Sotheby’s featured a number of contemporary artists, including Mark Rothko and Roy Lichtenstein, and totaled $222.45m.
“Most of the bidding was from very smart collectors, some who were long-time [collectors] andthers who were new sophisticated entrants from the global community,” said Tobias Meyer, Sotheby’s worldwide head of contemporary art.
The buyer of the Warhol black and white painting on canvas was not revealed, the Independent reported.
